New ccTLD Update – Argentina – Launch of direct registrations under .AR

In a surprise announcement, the Argentinean domain name registry have announced that it is now possible to register domains under the direct TLD .AR. This new extension is being launched in three phases as follows:

Phase 1: Sunrise/Grandfathering Phase

The sunrise phase runs from 11 September 2019 to 9 November 2019, and is an end-date sunrise. This phase is reserved for the owners of third-level domains (.COM.AR, .NET.AR, .ORG.AR) who registered their domain name before 1 December 2015.
If there is more than one applicant for the direct .AR domain (because the .COM.AR, .NET.AR and/or .ORG.AR have different owners) then the applicants will be assigned a priority number by ‘lottery’, and the applicant with the highest priority will be given the first opportunity to pay for and register the domain. If that applicant does not make the payment then the offer moves on to the applicant with the next highest priority number, and so on. If no party makes the payment then the domain will become available during General Availability.

Phase 2: Landrush/Premium Phase

This phase runs from 25 November 2019 to 23 January 2020 and is open to everyone to register domains that were not registered during Phase 1. During this phase, applicants will have to pay a non-refundable fee to register their interest in a domain. If there is only one applicant then that applicant will be able to pay the registration fee to secure the domain. If there is more than one applicant then priority numbers will be assigned by ‘lottery’ (as described above).

Phase 3: General Availability

This phase starts on 23 February 2020.
