What trademark holders don’t know about domains
Some trademark holders have more experience of the domain name industry than others, but there are a few common problems that we continually encounter across the spectrum. One problem which is more common than you may think is for companies to launch new brands without having first secured the associated domain names. This is incredibly risky, leaving you open to ransom by opportunists who may snap up your domain. There are also instances of companies launching a new online platform or website, promoting the new URL in advertising and merchandising, and then realising on or close to the day of launch that the new URL has not actually been established and is not ready to go live. It is vital that as part of any campaign to launch a new product or initiative any necessary domain names or sub-domains are planned, purchased or setup well in advance of launch: certain jurisdictions have a very slow process to register domains and different technical teams may need coordinating in order to effect a new sub-domain.
