From 10 December 2009, it will be possible to register .eu domains in the 23 scripts of the European Union.
EU launches IDN Registration from early December
EURid, operator of the .eu domain extension, is to launch IDN registrations on 10th December 2009. The domains, which will be in the format of IDN.EU (not IDN.IDN), will be made available on a first come first served basis.
The 23 official languages used within the European Union will be supported although not every character in every script will be available: for example the German ß will not be allowed. The mixing of multiple scripts within a domain is also prohibited. EURid has published five tables featuring all the non-ASCII characters that will be available, described in English together with the official Unicode number. See www.eurid.eu/en/eu-domain-names/idns-eu/supported-characters.
EURid’s current nexus rule, requiring applicants to have a local presence within the European Union, will apply to all new registrations.
If you wish to register under IDN.EU, you need to prepare the terms you require either in the native script (e.g. été.eu) or in puny code format (e.g. xn--t-9fab.eu), but not as Unicode (e.g. U+00E9 U+0074 U+00E9.eu).
